Hello Again!!

So, I think after 8ish months of not being on this, it was about time I added something! Right now, we're facing in to a couple of hectic weeks in college with projects & exams, but it has to be done!

Tomorrow sees our national football team face of against Les Bleus in the second leg of our World Cup qualifier @ Stade de France. Unfortunately, the Irish head into the tie needing to overcome a 1-0 deficit. And we won't fall short on belief and effort if anything else! Come on the Irish ;)

Cisco to Buy Video Camera Maker

Cisco Systems Inc. have aquired a Camcorder maker, and is now moving deeper into Consumer Electronics

Cisco said it will pay around $590 million in stock to acquire Pure Digital Technology Inc., maker of pocket-sized camcorders, continuing the business-technology giant's push into consumer products.

The San Francisco-based start-up's Flip devices are known for their small size and for being among the first low-cost video cameras on the market, with prices of around $200.

Cisco announced last week that Pure Digital has sold more than two million Flip cameras since releasing the device in May 2007.

The acquisition is the latest move by Cisco to diversify away from its core business of selling computer-networking gear to consumer electronics.

Manchester United crowned Carling Cup Winners 2009!

Manchester United yesterday added yet another acolade to their trophy cabinet, beating Tottenham 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out in the Carling Cup Final '09.

This win is a 24th trophy for Sir Alex in 23 years of management at the Red Devils. Having lifted the Fifa Club World Cup trophy back in December, United's youthful squad were keen to impress, and add another medal to their collection, or start the ball rolling for such talents as Johnny Evans and Danny Welbeck.

In a match which saw 120 minutes of tense action end in stalemate, it was Ben Foster's turn to shine, on just his 7th first team appearance. Ferguson has stuck to his guns throughout this season's competition and the final was to be no different. With some key experience at the center of it all, the youngsters came out and did themselves proud.

With 20 minutes of normal time remaining, Foster was called into his first real piece of action, saving from Aaron Lennon.

The final kick of the 90 was the most dramatic, with Cristiano Ronaldo's thunderous shot rebounding off the post. He was unlucky not to snatch victory for United at the ed of normal time. Ronaldo had had to put behind him the laughable yellow card he received for perceived "diving" earlier. This in fact proved to have been a great shout for a Manchester United penalty, in stark contrast to the opinion of Referee Chris Foy at the time.

It couldn't have been anyone but United legend Ryan Giggs to came the youth of the team, netting the first penalty of the shoot out. Ben Foster then cemented his man of the match performance, saving Jamie O' Hara's kick. Tevez and Ronaldo both converted, so it was now 3-1. Bentley stepped up, and missed the target, rolling wide. It was Anderson who completed the formalities for United in the end.

United can now strive to push on and fight for glory in each of their three remaining competitions this season.

Google Gmail outage compensation: $2.05 per user

So...did anyone notice a lack of response from Google's mail service, Gmail, yesterday? Firstly it seemed the whole internet connection was slow, but I soon realised it was Gmail, and Gmail only!....at a time i needed to use it!

If your business used Gmail and the service went out for two and a half hours, do you think you lost $2.05 per user in productivity?

That's the monetary equivalent of what Google offered to compensate Google Apps Premiere Edition customers after Gmail was unavailable for about two and a half hours on Tuesday. And it was being generous: All it had to offer was the equivalent of 41 cents per user.

According to a Gmail outage blog posting by Gmail site reliability manager Acacio Cruz, the outage lasted "approximately two and a half hours." By my math, assuming there were no other outages in February, that means uptime of 99.63 percent for the month.

Google offered an explanation of what happened on another blog post:
"This morning, there was a routine maintenance event in one of our European data centers. This typically causes no disruption because accounts are simply served out of another data center," Cruz said. "Unexpected side effects of some new code that tries to keep data geographically close to its owner caused another data center in Europe to become overloaded, and that caused cascading problems from one data center to another. It took us about an hour to get it all back under control."

So here's hoping Google manage to keep on top of things. They provide one of the largest and most popular email services used by millions.

Microsoft Heading for Retail?

Microsoft Corp. has made a bold move in a bid to stay in touch with major competitors Apple Inc. It has hired a former Wal-Mart Stores Inc. executive to aid the company in opening its own retail stores. This proves a strategy shift that borrows from the playbook of rival Apple Inc.

In a statement, Microsoft said their first priority for the former exec., will be to define where to place the Microsoft stores and when to open them. The company's current plans are for a "small number" of stores.

It remains to be seen whether the effort can add some sparkle to Microsoft's unfashionable image. They are hoping create a "world-class shopping experience" for the company's customers.

The move is a sign of the deeper role consumer-technology companies are playing in the retail business, despite the many risks of straying from their core original businesses of making hardware and software. Apple, of Cupertino, Calif., faced widespread doubt when it first lauched its retail chain in the early millenium. Now, eight years down the line, Apple's chain of more than 200 stores around the world are widely credited with helping the company boost sales of its Mac, iPod and iPhone product lines. The Apple stores, with their eye-catching architecture, highly-trained sales staff and "genius bars" that provide technical support, gave Apple a way to showcase its products in an clean environment.

Like its fierce competitor Apple, Microsoft is set to open its own retail shops.
Microsoft has long flirted with the idea of doing its own store. In a 20,000-square-foot warehouse near its campus in the suburbs of Seattle, Microsoft has tested various retail concepts, complete with shelves displaying Xbox games and big computer monitors with touch-sensitive screens.

One task will be to figure out whether to actually sell computers rather than just simply show off their features.....watch this space!!

Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!!

While many of us thought February was supposed to introduce us to the Spring season, this year is proving slightly different, with it seemingly being smack in the middle of winter at the moment. The last few weeks have seen a sharp cold snap circulating around the country, while it has deteriorated substantially in recent days. Stormy conditions which began in Russia have gradually moved through Europe and reaching the UK and Ireland. The last few days have seen sleet, rain, and yes...snow. While Connacht has had a few bouts of snow in recent weeks, it finally made its way to Cork.

So, while it may be good to enjoy the snow and take it in for a while, we do still need to be aware of the severity of the cold outside, so wrap up. And also drive safe, as roads can prove hazardous.

Motorists are being advised to take extra care when driving as road conditions remain treacherous in many parts.

Around the country drivers must contend with snow, slushy and slippery roads and some flooding following severe weather overnight.

Pension Levy Under Fire as Dail Debates Cuts

The Dáil is to debate the Government's unpopular spending cuts package, which is aimed at saving €2bn this year.

Legislation dealing with the public service pension levy is to be introduced by the beginning of next month.

With the majority of people previously willing to accept a cut in actual income, this replacement proposal has not been well-received. Public service unions have reacted angrily to the pensions levy on public servants, which will cost an average of 7.5% of gross income.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny yesterday described the plan as a sticking plaster to cover a gaping wound in the public finances.

While Labour leader Eamon Gilmore claimed the Government had added to the difficulties and increased public confusion, while Sinn Féin's Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin urged the Government concentrate on job creation rather than spending cuts.

Why should us, as the Irish Nation, suffer the consequences of the government's inept approach to running our country. The lack of leadership, common sense and logic that this set of ministers has is seriously disheartening. We need a leader, someone who is willing to do all is necessary to get our economy back on track, WITHOUT making the people suffer.

The pension levy rates are as follows:

A person earning €15,000 gross would pay a pension levy of 3% and the levy rises gradually thereafter.

* 6.4% on €35,000
* 7.2% on €45,000
* 7.7% on €55,000
* 8.1% on €65,000
* 8.5% on €85,000
* 8.8% on €100,000
* 9.2% on €150,000
* 9.4% on €200,000
* 9.6% on €300,000.

Wi-Fi for Buses!!

With mobile Internet access fast becoming a necessity for the average Irish professional, coach company JJ Kavanagh & Sons has become the first in Ireland to bring the information age to their passengers, introducing onboard Wi-Fi to their full fleet of coaches with their partners Fleet Connect Ltd.

The latest vehicle technology will provide high speed wireless internet access for passengers and allow the company to track the location of each vehicle in its fleet in real-time, resulting in an improved service for its customers. The introduction of the Wi-Fi service has resulted from the growing need of business commuters to be accessible and connected at all times as well as increased consumer internet usage.

Students want to access to social entertainment such as Bebo and Facebook and all other passengers now have the option of logging on line for their specific needs throughout their journey.

Recent research has shown that public Wi-Fi hotspot usage grew by over 272% in Europe in 2008.

Breaking Sports News: Its Wembley in 2011

Wembly Stadium, in London, England has been chosen to host the 2011 European Champions League Final. The event, which was last year won by Manchester United 07/08, has graced such places as Moscow(last) and Istanbul(2005). This will no doubt prove a huge incentive for the teams in England and Britain's top flight leagues to progress as far as possible in the competition.

The last few years have been hugely successful for the English representatives. Liverpool won the competition in 2005, following with an appearance as runners up in 2006. The following year, 2007, saw Arsenal finish 2nd to Barcelona, while last season, 2008, was probably the most successful, with an all-English final. Manchester United went on to beat Chelsea in Moscow. In recent years, these teams have rarely failed to reach the quarter finals, with at least 2 teams in the semis (3 last year).

Munich's Allianz Arena and Berlin's Olympiastadion, which featured in the 2006 World Cup, were also in the running but Uefa has opted for Wembley. Old Trafford was the last English stadium to host the showpiece event when Manchester United's ground staged the 2003 final between AC Milan and Juventus.

Barack Obama Inauguration - "Yes We Can!"

Tuesday, 20th January 2009 witnessed one of the most historical days on record, for Barack Obama stepped up to be crowned the 44th President fo the United States, but the first non-caucasian ever.
An event that would send shivers up and down your spine saw thousands of people rave the harsh cold weather to gather outside the White House to witness such an historical moment.

Chants to the tone of Obama's trademark words "Yes We Can" rang out all around. Barack Obama made one eye-opening point. In words to the effect that just 60 years ago his own father would have struggled to be served in a restaurant. Yet now, this man stands before us, being sworn in as the 44th President of America. It both acknowledges the unfair and harsh reality of life for people of previous generations, and celebrates how far we as a race have come.

Personally, I am delighted to have been able to witness such a hugely important event in our history. There is a sense of energy, spirit, positivity and hope about this man - a new dawn has come, change is upon us.

Kaka..."Eastlands....I didn't give it 30 seconds thought!"

With Kaka's proposed £100 million move to Manchester City having extinguished, it seems there may be some justice in the world after all!

Midweek saw Manchester United progress to the Wembley Carling Cup Final, beating Derby 4-3 on aggregate. A match that saw United 3-0 up in the first half, came at a cost for Manchester United, with some more casualties to add to the injury list. Anderson and Rafael face a few weeks on the sidelines, while they hope to have Johnny Evans fit in around a week.

Next up for Manchester United are Tottenham in the F.A. Cup 4th round.

Premier League Update

So, Sunday brought a great result for Manchester United, comprehensively beating Chelsea 3-0 at Old Trafford. With two games in hand on their title rivals Man United have the chance to top the Premier League table before leaders Liverpool play again on Monday night. Tonight sees United face Wigan at Old Trafford in the first of those all-important games. Unfortunately, Patrice Evra has now been ruled out for up to four weeks, while Rio Ferdinand won't return for another fortnight. But, with Cristiano Ronaldo picking up the Fifa World Player of the Year award this week, alls not too bad for the club.

On the other side of Manchester, City have launched a record-breaking
€100 million bid for AC Milan star Kaka. The Brazilian previously
expressed an interest in coming to the Premier League at some stage, and could stand to earn €75 million over 5 years (Around €260,000 per week) if the move goes ahead.

Happy New Year

So, 2008's out and roll on 2009. Christmas is behind us as we settle into a new year once again. College resumes tomorrow, which might take some adjusting to on account of the lack of lie-ins.
